Roadmap, Integration and API Services

Their Challenge

This Fortune 100 technology manufacturer had a legacy, tightly coupled architecture with high run costs which posed risks to key business processes such as financial close and customer fulfillment. The lack of standardized integration design principles and technologies caused too many variations in the designs which hampered reusability. "Integration and Middleware Architecture" had been identified as a key IT risk area for operational capabilities with potential negative impact on customer experience, NPS score, revenue, and EPS.

What We Did

itsoli started with an assessment of the customer’s current integration landscape including solutions/services and underlying technologies, people, processes, and governance. Based on the findings, we developed the strategy and roadmap for integration, including defining target state integration patterns, solutions, and technologies that met our customer’s business goals. We established governance and operating models to manage the transition to the target state and decommissioning of current state solutions.

The roadmap would be orchestrated by a federated integration “”center of enablement””  to ensure sponsorship from all stakeholders for consistency in approach, design and leverage of components in order to achieve the goals of lower cost, reduced risk and faster innovation. This included:

  • Operating model with central governance and decentralized execution by project teams
  • “Community of practice” approach to learning and the sharing of knowledge
  • Staffing plan to support the governance and operating model.
  • Business case to quantify benefits and investments.

Results

The target state technology architecture was proposed as a loosely-coupled integration framework utilizing Enterprise Service Bus and API-based integration. The project brought three-year savings of $16M through the reduction of development efforts and costs for integration capabilities as well as the decommissioning of costly legacy integration solutions. It improved service delivery and enabled faster time to market while reducing the business risk associated with increased data movement and potential fragmentation.
